Sustainability Committee

Responsibilities

  • Understanding issues impacting environmental sustainability (climate change, pollution, use of non-renewable energy sources, etc.)
  • Identifying existing programs and services available to improve or alleviate these issues, or recommend changes, enhancements, or establishments of programs to address these issues.
  • Facilitating the communication of programs and services to university staff.
  • The committee is encouraged to seek assistance from those who possess knowledge and expertise with regard to the issues they are exploring.

Currently, energy consumption is the largest non-personnel expenditure at ASU. If operating schedules can be reduced by 10% overall, the savings to ASU could be close to $500,000 annually. Energy consumption is a hidden cost of many of our daily activities. Below are a myriad of ideas on how we can decrease our energy use on campus (and at home!) We can make significant reductions in this area if we all work together and really make an effort, potentially saving the University millions of dollars and reducing the probability of lost jobs. The added benefit is that most of them are easily implemented and can easily become good habits that will have a lifelong positive impact.
